Worried you'll be declined? Here's what's behind most knock-backs

Most recorded declines in our data came down to debt, account conduct or loan size, and all three can change.

Key takeaways
  • Existing debt was the most common reason for recorded declines on applications through Valiant in FY26, followed by account conduct and loan size.
  • Together, those three were behind about 2 in 3 recorded declines. Credit file issues accounted for about 1 in 6.
  • All three main reasons usually come down to timing and fit, so there's often something you can do about them before you apply.

If you’ve been putting off applying for equipment or cash flow funding because you’re bracing for a no, you’re not alone.

We looked at the reasons recorded for declined applications that came through Valiant in FY26. Most came down to how much the business already owed, how its bank account looked, or how much it asked for. All three can change.

Existing debt topped the list of decline reasons

Here’s how often each reason came up in recorded declines in FY26:

  • Existing debt: about a quarter of declines. Repayments on current loans, equipment leases, credit cards or an ATO payment plan already take up a big share of what the business brings in.
  • Account conduct: about 1 in 5 declines. Recent bank statements show things like overdrawn days or dishonoured payments.
  • A loan amount the cash flow can’t cover: just under 1 in 5 declines. The business could support some finance, but the repayments on the amount requested would stretch its cash flow too far.
  • Credit file issues: about 1 in 6 recorded declines. The business’s or a director’s credit file shows things like defaults, missed repayments or a lot of recent credit enquiries.

Together, the top three were behind about 2 in 3 recorded declines. Your credit history still matters, but in our data it played a smaller role than the factors above. That fits a wider shift, with lenders giving credit scores less weight than they once did.

How to put yourself in a stronger position

All three main reasons come down to timing and fit, and none are necessarily permanent roadblocks:

  • If you already have finance, it's still worth a conversation. You might be ready to refinance or take on new funding sooner than you think, or a few months away. A broker can help you work out when, and what to focus on in the meantime.
  • If your bank statements show dishonoured payments or overdrawn days,  it's worth knowing that lenders' tolerance for these varies a lot. Some will decline after a single dishonour in the last six months, while others accept several a month. A few steadier months can still help, and in the meantime, lining up direct debits with when your customers pay and chasing overdue invoices sooner can help keep your account in the black.
  • If the amount is a stretch, reducing it or accepting a longer term with lower repayments can bring it within what your cash flow supports. Keep in mind, a longer term usually means paying more interest overall.

Applying again after a decline

An unsuccessful application reflects one lender’s view at one point in time. But different lenders have different requirements, and your business’s numbers change from month to month. So, a ‘no’ from one today can become a ‘yes’ from another down the track.

If you’ve been turned down for finance before, it helps to know why. Ask the lender if they haven’t told you, and mention it when you reapply so you’re matched with options that suit where your business is now.

Getting your application to the right desk

When you go directly to a bank, your application is reviewed against that bank’s own lending criteria. Through Valiant, a broker looks across a panel of 95+ lenders to find the best fit for your business. They also prepare your application and make the case for it, giving the lender the full picture of your business from the get-go.

Methodology: The decline reasons in this article are based on applications submitted through Valiant in FY26 (July 2025 to June 2026) where a broker recorded the lender’s decision and the reason for it. Not every decline is recorded, so the figures show the share of recorded declines linked to each reason. They reflect applications through Valiant and aren’t intended to represent the wider business lending market.
